Paul Krugman, an outspoken liberal economist known for his support of the Obama administration, today said the United States has become an “authoritarian surveillance state.”
Paul Krugman (Credit: YouTube)
Part of a panel on
This Week with George Stephanopoulos
, Krugman offered his take on the bombshell NSA spying revelations:
“…there are different kinds of surveillance states. You can have a democratic surveillance state which collects as little data as possible and tells you as much as possible about what it’s doing. Or you could have an authoritarian surveillance state which collects as much as possible and tells the public as little as possible. And we are kind of on the authoritarian side.”
Krugman’s statement followed fellow panelist George Will’s observation that “we’re using techn

Man Keeps the Pounds Off by ‘Smoking’ Alcohol Instead of Drinking It — But What Do Docs Say of the Trend? Man Keeps the Pounds Off by ‘Smoking’ Alcohol Instead of Drinking It — But What Do Docs Say of the Trend?

Those looking to cut out a few calories might choose to eliminate alcohol from their diet. But a Texas man is saying he was able to lose 80 pounds — keep it off — and enjoy the effects of alcohol.
Broderic Allen ”smokes” alcohol instead of ingesting it, a practice which doctors say is very bad for one’s health, WFAA-TV
reported
. To do this, the alcohol is mixed with dry ice and the vapors are inhaled.

“Once you lose the weight, you want to keep it off,” he said. “So I figured I could have my cake and eat it, too.”
Allen said if you do it “too much at once, it’s kind of overwhelming.”
WFAA-TV reported Dr. Walter Gaman saying there’s a reason for that.
“It goes right through your lungs, hits your bloodstream, and goes right to your brain,” he said. This means the su

A speech expert for George Zimmerman’s defense called it “imaginary stuff” to claim that slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin can be heard begging for help in 911 audio.
George Doddington refuted analysis from a state witness who testified that he detected Martin screaming “I’m begging you” on a 911 call.
“That’s imaginary stuff,” Doddington said during a pretrial in Sanford, Fla. Friday, calling the methodology to detect the audio — using another recording of M

It has been 69 years since the beaches of Normandy were stormed by Allied soldiers on what’s famously known as “D-Day.”
A full day of ceremonies, including fireworks, concerts and marches, is planned across Normandy, France, Thursday in honor of the 150,000 troops, mainly US, British and Canadian, who risked or gave their lives on June 6, 1944, in the liberation of German-occupied western Europe during World War II.

Evangelist Billy Graham’s Bible was the focus of a brief segment during Glenn Beck’s radio program this morning. In addition to discussing the famed preacher’s past views and history in the civil rights movement, the commentator shared an intriguing find — a verse he found on the back of Graham’s Bible.

“On the very back, on the back page, what does Billy Graham write on the back of his Bible?,” Beck rhetorically asked, proceeding to read directly from the book.
“[On] the very back of his Bible he writes this one verse, ‘Fear not, for I am with thee. Be not dismayed. I am God and I will strengthen thee. I will help thee, yea. I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness,” he added.
This verse, which clearly focuses upon reliance on God, is Isaiah 41:

NYT columnist hates summer, may also hate children and butterflies

Who hates summer? Even with all the heat, most people are happier during the summer, if for no other reason than that it sounds like a nice name for a season.
But then there’s
New York Times
columnist
Frank Bruni
. He hates summer:
Does summer have to be so grammatically piggy, a vain noun with adjectival delusions? Summer vacation. Summer rental. Summer stage. Summer stock. Summer lover. Summer fling. Summer nights. Summer breeze. …
It’s a mean season, even leaving the sun to the side. People drown, are struck by lightning and wear seersucker. I realize that the last item doesn’t really fit with the previous two, but it’s another potent argument against summer, and I had to put it in somewhere.
Then again, it may have something to do with him having skin cancer.

he had seen Russian intelligence on the deceased bombing suspect’s “plans to join the insurgency” in southern Russia.
