Editorial: Xbox One and Broadband Penetration Editorial: Xbox One and Broadband Penetration

According to the documents released by Microsoft on Thursday, Xbox One will require a broadband connection of 1.5 Megabits per second and will check in with Microsoft’s servers every
24 hours to reauthenticate the system and games
So is requiring broadband a killer problem for the system? As I go through my briefly-researched findings here, keep in mind that I’m focusing on the United States, Microsoft’s primary market and also the only country for which I know more about the broadband than just a simple percentage.
For most of us with a broadband connection, 1.5 Megabit is laughable, something we could handle a few times over. Comcast recently increased speed across a large portion of their services, often doubling user speeds as they try to modernize their network (which goes along with

Vine on Android: Users Report Glitches, Problems

Vine is finally on Android
. While the six-second video-making
app’s arrival in the Google Play store
should be cause for celebration, some smartphone users are complaining that the newly-ported app is glitchy, buggy or just not working at all.
Of course, these complaints represent a small number of the smartphone users enjoying Vine on Android, but this is the Internet and that means everyone gets to have their voices heard, even if they’re just complaining.
Here’s a taste of what a few Twitter on people have to say:

Meet Ashley Esqueda! Inside the Herd Meet Ashley Esqueda! Inside the Herd

What I do in the Herd
If it’s on-camera, I probably have something to do with it. I’ll be producing, hosting, writing, editing and otherwise handling all kinds of video production stuff here at TB. I’ll likely be branded as “the hammy yet bizarre one,” but I’ve been like that since I was a kid, so if I can do that professionally, yay!
Best Thing About Being in the Herd
Being less prone to ending up a burger on someone’s fancy dinner menu!
Oh, being in THE Herd, not A herd.
I’m excited about working with a team who’s pushing hard to create great video content regularly, and bringing that product to you to enjoy. Also, I get an office to showcase all the neat toys and gadgets I’ve collected over the years. Score!

I’m a sixth-generation Southern Californian,

Facebook Pressured to Crack Down on Hate Speech Facebook Pressured to Crack Down on Hate Speech

An open letter to Facebook recently put the company under fire for turning a blind eye to the misogynistic hate speech taking up residence on its network.
The letter
— a collaboration between groups Women, Action, & The Media, and the Everyday Sexism Project, along with activist Soraya Chemaly — cited active pages celebrating rape and domestic abuse. The writers singled out a few examples, including “Violently Raping Your Friend Just for Laughs,” “Kicking your Girlfriend in the Fanny because she won’t make you a Sandwich” and others containing content and graphics featuring abused women. The groups call for the company to take action and address the material on the site.
Perhaps Facebook is used to being a target now, but there’s no business on Earth that wants to be linked to rape or dom

UNO & Friends: Play the Classic Card Game With Millions of Friends UNO & Friends: Play the Classic Card Game With Millions of Friends

UNO is one of those universally beloved card games any kid or adult can easily pick up and play, no matter if it’s during a family gathering or around a campfire in the woods. And while there’s no replacing the experience of playing with an actual deck, UNO & Friends is still a solid alternative. The game, as the name implies, is the classic UNO experience brought to your mobile device (Android and iPhone, free), that lets you play with friends over Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Developed by Gameloft, UNO & Friends allows players to play with close friends or complete strangers, with an online leaderboard displaying the top brass of the UNO world. Being that this is a Gameloft interpretation, there are additions that may or may not sit well with diehard fans; stuff such as boosts and super boost

Buffalo Gear: Adidas miCoach Smart Ball Buffalo Gear: Adidas miCoach Smart Ball

Keeping in the spirit of yesterday’s UEFA Champions League final, I thought Adidas’ new miCoach Smart Ball, which is capable of syncing with an iOS device, was perfect for Buffalo Gear. While companies are making footballs lighter, Adidas is making them smarter. It looks like your typical football on the outside, but inside it’s fitted with technology that’s capable of measuring speed, spin and trajectory to give you an idea of how you’re performing. The ball can then connect via Bluetooth so you can check up on each strike, whether it be a deadball situation or volley.
Fitted with a spring-mounted sensor, the Smart Ball is designed with different training programs in mind, including casual sessions, a “Get Better” category, and Challenges for deadball practice. On the outside of the ball,

Summertime 101: How to Look Great in Photos Summertime 101: How to Look Great in Photos

Summer is upon us, and you know what that means: Vacations, weddings, picnics, barbecues and plenty of other settings for a whirlwind of photos. It’s a social,
snap-happy world we live in, and if you’ve never been satisfied with how you look in pics, that can really follow you around.
There are more reasons than ever to learn how to look great in photos. Your
LinkedIn profile demands it, as do Facebook and other social networks, not to mention online dating. And wouldn’t we all be happier if our work/school IDs didn’t make us look like Gollum?
If you have the digital files, you could use Photoshop, but that only works when you have the skills and the time for editing. Then there are mobile apps like

Best Buy Posts Loss of $81M in Q1 2013 Best Buy Posts Loss of $81M in Q1 2013

Best Buy released its first quarter 2013 earnings on Tuesday and noted a net earnings loss of $81 million, representing a loss of $0.24 per share. The big box retailer said international revenue of $1.4 billion declined 9.6 percent over the same quarter last year and that domestic revenue of $7.98 billion also fell 9.6 percent over the same quarter last year. Domestic store sales were also down 1.1 percent. Best Buy blamed that figure on the Super Bowl’s shift to the fourth quarter of this year, which has a huge impact on the company’s TV sales.
“Looking ahead, we remain focused on making progress on our Renew Blue priorities announced last November and reiterated in March,” Best Buy president and CEO Hubert Joly said. “During the second quarter, we will, in particular, complete the deploy

Microsoft Reveals Xbox One Specs Microsoft Reveals Xbox One Specs

Mark Whitten unveiled the Xbox One’s internals at its event on Tuesday, saying the console takes advantage of 8GB of RAM and a BluRay player. Additional specs include USB 3.0, Wi-Fi Direction, 802.11n, HDMI in/out, 500GB HDD, 8 core CPU and THREE OPERATING SYSTEMS. Three operating systems in one console, with a revamped Xbox OS, kernel of Windows and a third that connects the first two for instant switching.
The specs are what enables such a seamless experience, allowing users to switch between all their entertainment without any lag. With such an emphasis being put on a single entertainment experience, Microsoft needed to include specs to power that, and it certainly seems like the Xbox One is a power beast.

Android 4.3 Coming Soon Bluetooth SIG Document Says Android 4.3 Coming Soon Bluetooth SIG Document Says

Maybe Google
planning to announce
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean yesterday
but hit a last minute snag. We’re guessing that only because the Bluetooth SIG recently published a press release that says Android will support Bluetooth Smart Ready and Bluetooth Smart in the coming months.
The Verge
noticed that the Bluetooth SIG has a page that says “the newest version of Android OS natively supports Bluetooth Smart Ready Technology,” although Google did not reveal the latest version yesterday.
That suggests that Android 4.3 will be published soon, although just how soon is still unknown. Bluetooth SIG also added that support will be available in the “coming months” so perhaps Google is waiting to see what Apple has in store during WWDC when it presents iOS 7 before launching Android 4.3. Or, perh
