McClay appointed Minister of Revenue

The PM has
announced
Prime Minister John Key has today announced Rotorua MP Todd McClay will be appointed as a new Minister outside Cabinet, following the resignation of Peter Dunne.
Mr McClay was elected into Parliament in 2008 and was made the Chair of the Finance and Expenditure Committee last year.
“Mr McClay will be the new Revenue Minister and Associate Health Minister,” Mr Key says.
“The role of Associate Conservation Minister will be discontinued and those responsibilities will be assumed by the lead Minister – Dr Nick Smith.”
Congrats to Todd McClay. Well deserved.
The deputy chair of the Finance and Expenditure select committee is Paul Goldsmith, so presumably he will become the new Chair.

Armstrong on Greens

John
Armstrong woke at the weekend
Norman appeared to offer further evidence of that later in the week when he rounded on the chairman of the Electricity Authority, Brent Layton.
National Party-aligned bloggers were not the only people asking in the wake of that attack who was being Muldoonist now.
Norman’s curt response to Layton’s detailed critique of the joint Labour-Greens plan to reform the wholesale electricity market was pretty tame stuff, especially when placed alongside Winston Peters’ slow evisceration of Peter Dunne.
However, Norman’s attack struck a discordant note coming as it did only days after the Greens’ co-leader had accused John Key of vilifying and bullying his critics in a manner which was as divisive as that of the late Sir Robert Muldoon.
Norman’s rejection of Layton

Lady Thatcher a Kiwi by marriage!

A little known fact is that Denis Thatcher’s father was born in New Zealand. That made Denis a Kiwi, and hence Margaret Thatcher a Kiwi by marriage.
Thomas Thatcher was born in 1848 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1878. He founded Atlas Preservatives, originally a sheep dip and weed killer manufacturer. His son Thomas Herbert Thatcher was born in New Zealand in 1885 and married Lilian Kathleen Bird, a secretary at Atlas. Their son was Denis Thatcher.
Thatcher Street in Castlecliff is named after Thomas Thatcher and Thomas Herbert attended Wanganu Collegiate from 1894 to 1897, when they moved back to England.

The forgotten general

An interesting documentary on Prime TV this Sunday at 8.35 pm:
THE FORGOTTEN GENERAL is a documentary which charts the life and career of Major-General Sir Andrew Hamilton Russell, Commander of the NZ Mounted Rifles at Gallipoli and overall Commander of the 20,000 strong NZ Division on the Western Front in World War I (a division which at any one time comprised 20,000 New Zealanders, and over the course of the war was responsible for over 70,000 soldiers). Russell is regarded by some as New Zealand’s one true military genius of the 20
century, and one of the very best commanders on the Western Front, from any nation. Russell is the one leader who emerged from Gallipoli with his reputation enhanced – not in tatters.
Once a household name, Russell’s life has been lost in the sands of time.

Greenpeace hypocrisy Greenpeace hypocrisy

Greenpeace is a strident campaigner against big oil, and especially against BP.
A spy has sent in this photo of the Rainbow Warrior being filled up at the weekend – by BP!
Why isn’t the Rainbow Warrior running on biodiesel?
I guess it is the old maxim of a group saying “Do as we say, not as we do.”

The racist George Galloway

The Independent
reports
The controversial MP George Galloway has been accused of racism after walking out of a meeting at Oxford University when he discovered he was debating with an Israeli.
Mr Galloway, who is the Respect party MP for Bradford West, had been speaking in the debate organised by Christ Church college in favour of the motion: “Israel should withdraw immediately from the West Bank”.
Around three minutes into the speech given by his opponent, Eylon Aslan-Levy, Galloway interrupted asking: “You said we. Are you an Israeli?”
The third year student Aslan-Levy answered “I am, yes.”
Galloway then stood up and replied: “I don’t debate with Israelis, I’ve been misled, sorry.”
Mr Galloway then left the lecture theatre.
This confirms what has been pretty obvious.
It is one thing to cr

HLFS Dec 2012

The
December 2012 HLFS
is out. Key points are:
Employment down 22,000 in quarter
Unenmployment also down 10,000 in quarter
Those not in labour force up 43,000
Unemployment rate down from 7.3% to 6.9%
Under 20 unemployment rate up to 30.9%
European unemployment rate up 0.1% to 5.5%
Maori unemployment rate down 0.3% to 14.8%
Pacific unemployment rate up 0.4% to 16.0%
Asian unemployment rate down 2.0% to 8.0%
Primary industry jobs down 10,400, manufacturing down only 800, construction up 4,500
Pretty weak data. The Government will face real challenges if the employment situation doesn’t improve in 2013. However worth noting that the 6.9% unemployment rate is 14th lowest of 34 in the OECD and lower than Canada, UK and US. The OECD average is 8.0%.

An unusual name for a dog

Stuff
reports
When Labour leader David Shearer rattled through the names of his Maori MPs and the good works they were doing, it sounded like a slip of the tongue when he referred to Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene as “Tino” before correcting himself.
But more likely he was indulging in some word association, given that the Shearer family’s dog is called Tino Rangatiratanga. The “schnoodle” got its name because his daughter first spotted it on the internet on Waitangi Day.
Does this mean the dog can file claims with the Waitangi Tribunal?
