Professor Alfano will be honored for contributions to the field of ultrafast laser science.
The American Physical Society (APS) has awarded the 2013 Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science to Distinguished Professor of Science and Engineering Robert Alfano. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to basic research using lasers to advance knowledge of the fundamental physical properties of materials and their interaction with light. The award is endowed by the NEC Corporation, an information technology and network solutions company, and provides a stipend of $10,000.

LaGuardia Community College Alumn’s “Best Film” to be Screened at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival

Long Island City, NY—
When his short film was selected “best film” at the Campus Movie Fest at Hunter College, Girard Tecson, a ’07 LaGuardia Community College graduate, knew that this would not be the film’s last screening. Packaged with the top award was an invitation to show the film at the 2014 Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival.
“It was quite a thrill to take the top prize at the festival,” said Girard, a media studies major at Hunter College, who produced, directed and edited the film. “But to know that the film will be screened at Cannes is a dream come true.”

Fabiana Araujo (’13) and Sarika Saxena (’13) represent Guantanamo detainee Abdulhadi Faraj as part of their work with CUNY Law’s Immigrant & Non-Citizen Rights Clinic (
). The U.S. government cleared Faraj for release from Guantanamo in 2009, but because of the risk of torture and now the civil war in Syria, Faraj’s homeland, he cannot be returned there. Araujo and Saxena are working to encourage the United States to resettle Faraj in an alternative country, and they are looking toward Brazil as a possible option.

An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, May 8, from 6-8 p.m.
Featuring the artist’s most recent work,
includes 13 large paintings and three sculptures. Cast in bronze and aluminum, the sculptures in the exhibition depict Toyonaga’s frightening yet whimsical creatures. These grotesque creatures also inhabit his paintings; they are both remarkable and almost scientific in their technical precision and attention to detail.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice will host the U.S. premiere of “When Cops Kill,” a documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Roger Graef. The film is part of the College’s Remembering Newtown series. The screening will take place on Monday, April 22 at 6 p.m. in John Jay’s new building at 524 West 59 Street in room L.63. Graef will be joined by John Jay Professors Jon Shane, a former police officer and expert on police training, and Peter Diaczuk, a ballistics expert and forensic scientist, for a discussion following the film.

Graduate Student Vadricka Etienne Wins 2013 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Vadricka Etienne, a second-year doctoral student in sociology, has been selected for a 2013 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. The title of Etienne’s study is “Viens Chez Moi: The Continuance of Ethnic Identification Unto the Third Generation of Haitian Immigrants.” Professor Philip Kasinitz is her advisor. The NSF, in its congratulatory notification, noted: “Your selection was based on your outstanding abilities and accomplishments, as well as your potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the US science and engineering enterprise.”
