IT Cost Optimization: Positioning the Business for Sustainable Growth IT Cost Optimization: Positioning the Business for Sustainable Growth

We all know the days of expensing lunch for your team at every required meeting is over. Your cost cutting strategy likely needs to have more solid tradeoffs than picking tap water over Perrier.
IT cost optimization
in today’s market is a function of benchmarking and communication. Developing a strategy based in those two factors will help you maintain sustainable growth in the future.
Build Stronger Communication
Be sure that your enterprise has transparency between IT and finance. Many times we find that those who hold the money (finance) are not clear on the priority level of our initiatives. And those who manage the initiatives (IT) are clueless when it comes to what the company can afford. Incidentally, one of the factors of prioritization needs to be what the company can and is will

How to Develop Marketing Strategies

I am frequently asked questions about how to develop marketing strategies for small businesses, entrepreneurs and solo-preneurs.
So, in today’s post, I’ll share a few tips with you.
– Step 1
The first thing you need to do is determine the basics – the 3 M’s of marketing – your market, your message and your media. You can read more about these items in my ‘
Marketing Concepts
‘ posts and articles.
Once you are clear on who your target market is, what the message is that you want to share and some of the media through which you can reach your target audience, you can start to build your strategy.
– Step 2
The next step is to take a closer look at the media options you have selected. Now you want to determine, step-by-step, what you will do to get your message out through the different type

Why Conflict Is Good in Expansion-Stage Companies Why Conflict Is Good in Expansion-Stage Companies

Recently, I wrote a blog post about
why stress can be good
even though the word is generally used in a negative connotation. After reading an article by Paul Spiegelman, founder and CEO of
, titled “
5 Tips to Resolve Conflicts
” on Inc.com I got to thinking the same thing in regards to the word “conflict”.
Is conflict always a bad thing? Should it automatically spark negativity?
I don’t think so. I think conflict, when approached in the right way, can be constructive and foster growth. This is particularly important in expansion-stage companies that need to sustain both motivation and high growth.
Here are a few reasons why I think conflict is good:
Conflict drives change:
Without conflict, nothing is ever questioned and nothing is ever changed. When there are different idea

7 Elements of an Intranet Governance Policy 7 Elements of an Intranet Governance Policy

To run a successful intranet, you need an intranet governance policy. There are no ifs and buts about it.
Intranet governance policy is a document that will guide you and all intranet users in running and maintaining the intranet. It will give your staff a common understanding of what your intranet is, what it’s for, and how to use it properly. It also provides a framework for planning intranet activities and for decision-making when issues or conflict arise.
In this post, I have listed the elements that may make up an intranet governance policy. Obviously, this is not a one-size-fits-all type of document. You’ll have to decide which elements are applicable to your organization.
To lower the risk of overwhelming you, I’ve divided the list into two parts. The part is a list of the essential

Facebook’s Mobile Ad Problem…is Not a Facebook Problem Facebook’s Mobile Ad Problem…is Not a Facebook Problem

Every morning I watch CNBC before work. Over the past few months, I’ve gotten
pretty sick of hearing about Facebook’s stock price and how it’s chiefly a problem with monetizing mobile
(and the fact it was way overvalued in the first place).
Tom Krazit in his
Gigaom article at the end of May
said it best,
“Everyone has a mobile problem: not just Facebook.”
According to Mary Meeker from Kleiner Perkins
, while mobile traffic now accounts for 10 percent of overall traffic, companies built around desktop ads are worried about the value of mobile ads–shown as 5 times less valuable than desktop display ads.
The biggest problem is that advertisers are still not thinking through the user experience.
In “researching”(formulating my opinion on) this issue, I clicked on various mobile ads from my

When Humor Goes Wrong in Social Media #DigitalSplash When Humor Goes Wrong in Social Media #DigitalSplash

Just today someone posted on Facebook to me “A little humor goes a long way.” My response, depends on if the humor offends.
When Brands Offend – Who Loses?
At least a colleague from same brand called them out for it. When is Humor Subjective?
For those who would tell me, Michele you are not in Pabst target market – so of course their humor does not resonate with you. Hang on there pardner! Even in Texas ( where we have one crazy ass Governor) – we know bad taste when we see it.
This is BAD Taste!
Who said women are not drinkers of Pabst Canada
Better yet …
Who said disrespecting women, whether they are your target market or not is smart business?
What does this make you think or feel about any brand, when you see this type of behavior?
Would you think twice about buying Pabst from either C

LA Restaurant Pays Customers to Put Away Their Cell Phones

The dinner table used to be a place for people to come together, enjoy stimulating conversation over delicious food and drinks, and strengthen bonds with those closest to us. Not long ago, interrupting dinner with a phone call was considered due cause for sincere apology. Diners were expected to excuse themselves from the table to take phone calls because the experience here and now took priority over far away business.
Now, with the advent of mobile communications and the ubiquity of smart phones, it’s not uncommon to see two people out to dinner at the finest restaurants completely absorbed in their pocket-sized touch screens throughout the entire meal. Texting between courses is acceptable, even expected. Dining guests reach into their pockets to snap pictures of their dishes and

Long Tail Analysis for Supply Chain Transformation Long Tail Analysis for Supply Chain Transformation

The decision to change the supply chain operations strategy can be one of the hardest a company has to face. The supply chain is the lifeline of a company, and any changes to it can have a drastic impact on a company’s bottom line.  But while most of the news we read focuses on supply chain disruptions and other disasters, there also exists a significant opportunity for many companies to use different supply chain strategies to their advantage.
Many companies today operate a single supply chain and fail to realize that distinct products often require distinct supply chains.  Depending on the characteristics of the product as it relates to demand uncertainty, price sensitivity, and timing requirements, there are different options for building supply chains that maximize a company’s bottom l

Mad Men: Top Tips for Avoiding Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Mad Men: Top Tips for Avoiding Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Photo used under Creative Commons from Christina Saint Marche
The 1960’s were a time punctuated by a male-dominated society. Looking back, we can see the obvious acts of sexual harassment committed in the popular AMC series Mad Men. While blatant sexual harassment has significantly decreased in the past 50 years since the time of Mad Men, many people still have much to learn about what constitutes sexual harassment in the workplace, and sexual harassment is still present in many offices around the world. While Mad Men is a fictional show, sexual harassment is a real problem in the modern workplace. We have compiled a list of six courses that will help you as an employee and as a manager to prevent sexual harassment and learn appropriate techniques to respond to any sensitive situations.

What Webmasters Can Learn From The Superbowl What Webmasters Can Learn From The Superbowl

For those who are not familiar with the Superbowl, it is an American holiday.
Well, not really. By the public, yes. In reality, no. It can also be considered the “World Cup” of North America for those who are soccer fans, but I am pretty sure you all know what the Superbowl is. The Super Bowl has always been the most watched American television broadcast, with this year’s Superbowl XLVI being the most watched ever. I live in the USA, and can say from experience that this event takes over the whole “Superbowl” Sunday. It even seems to take over the whole week prior to the game!
As those who watch the Superbowl like I do, know that one of the big things that captures a lot of attention are the commercials.
What haven’t they been able to come up with!
